Mouthguards are essential in sports because they protect against various dental injuries. They can prevent broken, chipped, or fractured teeth by distributing the force of a blow across all teeth, reducing the risk to any single tooth. Additionally, mouthguards protect the soft tissues of the mouth, including the lips, cheeks, and tongue, from being bitten during impact. They also help prevent jaw fractures by acting as padding between the upper and lower rows of teeth, which is critical in reducing the risk of more serious injuries, such as concussions. Furthermore, mouthguards can protect dental restorations, such as braces and bridges, from damage. The American Dental Association recommends wearing custom-fitted mouthguards for a variety of sports, including basketball, football, hockey, wrestling, and others.

But what a lot of people don't know is that wearing a mouthguard is beneficial while lifting weights ?

Wearing a mouthguard while weight lifting is recommended for several reasons.

Firstly, it can help prevent dental injuries such as enamel damage, pulp injuries, and fractures due to clenching and grinding of the teeth during lifting.

Secondly, mouthguards can improve performance by allowing for better breathing and positioning of the jaw, which can lead to increased strength and power output.

Clenching the jaw while wearing a mouthguard can increase strength by up to 10% according to a study from Marquette University.

Additionally, wearing a mouthguard can help prevent headaches caused by intense jaw clenching.

Lastly, a mouthguard can protect the mouth from biting the tongue or breaking teeth in case of accidents such as a barbell falling.

You want a good firm mouthguard that's specifically molded to your jaw.

I personally use the New age 6ds non contact mouthguard after using a few other brands i found the best results through New age.

The plastic is specially engineered to take the compressive force of the jaw while being super easy to mold and clean.

You warm up some water, drop the mouthguard in and let sit. After a few minutes in the warm water it's soft enough to mold.

Place it in your mouth and it will mold to your jaw. One cool it's ready to help you hit those PRs
