High fructose corn syrup is a sweetener made from corn that is added to many foods. Also known as Glucose-fructose.

Made by breaking down corn starch into the glucose molecules while enzymes convert some of the glucose into fructose. This results into a liquid sweetener that high in fructose compared to corn syrup.

Referring to them further in this post we will call High fructose corn syrup as HFCS

Additionally, when examining HFCS accompanied by a number (e.g., HFCS 42) this indicates where it sits on the glycemic index.

HFCS 42 are used in processed foods, cereals, baked goods, and beverages.

HFCS 55 are used primarily in soft drink production.

There are a few health concerns associated with the consumption of too much HFCS

  • In the United States, it is regarded as the main cause of obesity.

  • Consuming large amounts of HFCS can result in increased liver fat, potentially causing serious health issues such as fatty liver disease and Type 2 diabetes.

  • Refined carbohydrate products, such as bread and crackers, frequently contain HFCS (66, 67, and 68), which may elevate your risk of developing health issues like high blood pressure and heart disease.

While it might be challenging to completely avoid, the most effective way to prevent health issues is to reduce the intake of foods high in added sugars that offer minimal nutrients (such as soda, chocolate bars, and candy).

Check the ingredients to see how much added sugar is in your food.
